Sideshow Collectibles: Buffy the Vampire Slayer
D'Hoffryn
D'Hoffryn

Comments: As the leader of all vengeance demons, D'Hoffryn made several appearances on Buffy the Vampire Slayer over the years, overseeing his charges that dispensed retribution in the human dimension. Observing and mentoring from his demon dimension called Arash Ma'har, D'Hoffryn assigned his vengeance demons to roam the Earth dispensing justice in the form of a fulfilled wish elicited from any wronged person, usually a female, thirsting for revenge. Refreshingly candid yet calm, the imposing demon had a keen eye for potential talent and recruited those humans harboring such an intense pain and need for revenge that they made the perfect candidates to exact vengeance themselves.

D'Hoffryn first appeared in the episode, "Doppelgangland," when his former most-favored demon, Anyanka summoned him to beg that her vengeance demon status be restored after her amulet power-center was smashed. As punishment, he denied her request and wasn't seen again until the episode, "Something Blue," when he was compelled to reappear due to Willow's intense grief over Oz's betrayal. When her "thy will be done" spell goes horribly wrong, causing pain and chaos for her friends, the demon is so impressed by her abilities that he opens a portal to his realm, where he offers her a job as one of his vengeance demons. The mortified Willow respectfully declines, but he provides her a summoning talisman in case she changes her mind.

D'Hoffryn's other appearances revolve around his continued relationship with Anyanka/Anya. He restores her vengeance demon powers after Xander leaves her at the altar and she half-heartedly works for him again. His role in her vengeance demon history is explored in the episode, "Selfless," where a weary Anya also chooses to give up her powers and D'Hoffryn enacts a terrible price for her decision, killing Halfrek, her fellow vengeance demon friend, in retribution.
