Sideshow Collectibles: The X-Files
I Want To Believe
Assistant Director Skinner
Sideshow Website Exclusive Figure

Comments: In the basement of the FBI lies an office containing something the government wants kept secret: the X-Files - unsolved cases marked 'X' that could not be closed due to strange and paranormal phenomena. Assigned to the task of heading up the X-Files is Assistant Director Walter Sergei Skinner, a former Marine and loyal Bureau veteran. Direct supervisor to Agents Fox Mulder (a criminal psychologist and believer in the paranormal) and Dana Scully (a forensic pathologist and skeptic), Skinner finds himself constantly walking a fine line between keeping his agents within acceptable FBI boundaries and obeying the commands from his superiors, who often act with dubious motives he does not agree with. Though he may not always show it, Skinner has a deep sense of duty and commitment to seeking justice.

Skinner enlisted in the Marine Corps on his eighteenth birthday and was deployed to fight in Vietnam. The harsh reality of serving in wartime forever changed Skinner's sense of idealism and blind faith. After an enemy ambush killed his entire patrol, Skinner had an out-of-body experience while dying in a body bag from a gunshot wound. A corpsman noticed that he was still alive and rushed him to a Saigon hospital where he awoke two weeks later remembering visions of an old woman guiding him back to his body, telling him that it was not yet his time to go. The woman reappeared to him years later when his own wife was near death. This paranormal experience had a profound effect on Skinner, influencing both his attitude towards his agents and his decision-making on the X-Files. After his military discharge, Skinner joined the FBI, and was quickly promoted up the ranks. A private and guarded man, Skinner finds it hard to let anyone get too close to him, even his wife, Sharon. This ability to build up a silent wall served him well in the FBI, but eventually cost him his 17-year marriage.

Skinner found himself answering to conflicting forces at the FBI, namely the Syndicate, a group of powerful and traitorous government conspirators allied with colonizing aliens. Represented by the mysterious Cigarette Smoking Man, the Syndicate's greatest fear was being exposed, and Skinner was often directed to do their bidding or risk the lives of his agents. At first, Mulder and Scully were unclear whether or not Skinner was an enemy or an ally. With little patience for Mulder's unorthodox methods and holding Scully accountable for Mulder's every misstep, Skinner always warned them not to dig too deep. Little did they know, his stern command was actually intended to protect them from the sinister tentacles of the Syndicate. Skinner was ultimately one of their only allies, helping them sometimes through unofficial channels often at the risk of his own life.

Along with the Alexander Krycek figure, the Assistant Director Skinner figure was offered directly from the Sideshow Collectibles site only and saw a production run of only 500 pieces. With the release of these two figures in 2006, the X-Files collection came to an end, leaving many collectors wanting more. To this day, these two figures are amongst the most sought after 1/6 scale figures produced from the company and usually don’t sell for less than $200 each.
