eBay Today: International G.I. Joe Card Art

When dealing with the International market, it is not uncommon for an American company to produce alternate packaging for multi-lingual countries. In the case of Hasbro, it has been broken down to near science with the use of generic card art.

Basically, non-US markets are considered to have much smaller demand for product. This is a combination of population and purchasing habits. Keeping these points in mind, it is important to find ways to make the product available in a cost efficient manner. The solution is to illuminate individual packaging designs in favour of a generic design that can be individualized by way of affordable multi-lingual product identification stickers.

International collectors have seen similar practices with the Star Wars and Marvel Legends lines as well. In most cases, the cards are used primarily for the Canadian and Mexican markets.

The gallery below is the first appearance of the generic G.I. Joe card art. At the current time, Wave 5 is the only wave to have the treatment (up until now, only the first two waves have turned up Internationally, and they were on the standard US card back). Chances are very good that as figures work their way through, we’ll end up with most, if not all, figures on the generic card. Time will tell.

Since generic cards limit the individual product information that is usually found on the back of their cards, Hasbro includes a folded information sheet in the blister of almost every International generic card figure they produce. In some cases, such as the majority of Star Wars figures that have been made for the International market over the last couple of years, the information sheets are also generic and the exact same sheet is packed in with every figure in the assortment. This of course is not the rule, so in the case of the International Marvel Legends, and as it turns out the International G.I. Joes, the information sheets are unique to the individual product.
