What could cause Spock to attack his friend and captain? Why must he kill Kirk? In 'Amok Time' a 1967 episode of the Original Star Trek series, Spock is experiencing pon farr, the Vulcan time of mating. Occurring every seven years, Spock must seek out and mate with his bride or die. Kirk, challenges a direct order from Starfleet to safely get his friend to his home planet. But when they arrive, Spock's bride, T'Pring, says she would rather not marry him. T'Pring invokes her right for Spock to fight for her hand and chooses Kirk as her champion. The two are handed lirpa's and immediately set to fighting. Spock having his blood-fever, quickly gains the upper hand on Kirk, who is handicapped by the Vulcan atmosphere. McCoy gives Kirk an injection of Tri-Ox compound to aide the captain, but he his quickly subdued and strangled by his first officer. Spock returns to the Enterprise, willing to face the certain court-martial for murder, where he finds Kirk alive and well, having been injected with a neuro paralyzer by McCoy instead. Spock lets his facade slip momentarily as he lets out a huge smile, happy that his friend and captain is alive.
